App of the Week: Topo Maps

John Hardin

It’s the App of the Week!

Each Wednesday members of the Griffin team share their favorite apps. This week we’re featuring John Hardin from our Sales department.

John is a big fan of the outdoors and hiking, so it’s natural that he chose an essential app for the extreme hiker.

Topo Maps is a collection of maps of USGS (United States Geological Survey) topographical maps which when printed mostly have a scale of 1:24,000. In Alaska they’re a mixture of 1:24,000 and 1:63,360. In Canada, they’re scans of Natural Resources Canada 1:50,000 topographical maps. They use contour lines to show the shape of the terrain and so are ideal for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Phil Endecott’s topography app includes more than 69,000 maps. It is available for download for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

The weather in Tennessee right now is perfect for heading to the Smokies for a hike. No matter where you are, we recommend you check out Topo Maps. Let us know what you think.
