School is out, the sun is shining, and the open road calls to you. You know what time it is. It’s roadtrip time! But before you head out on the highway, make sure you’ve packed everything you need to make your summer road trip a success!
If you’re going to plan a trip, you probably want to know where you’re going. Ten years ago, this would have meant an atlas. Fortunately, those big, unwieldy, tree-killing relics of the age of explorers have been replaced with smartphone apps that give you turn-by-turn directions. And whether you’re using Apple’s underrated Maps app, or the newer, more dynamic Google Maps, the best way to make use of them is with a window- or dashboard-mounting phone bracket, to give you that true low-distraction GPS experience. A great solution for this is the Griffin WindowSeat, which mounts to either window or dash, and adjusts for portrait or landscape viewing. And, thanks to it’s three-point adjustable mount, it can hold pretty much any smartphone comfortably.
And speaking of distraction, whether you’ve got kids in the back seat, or just a chatty friend kicking in gas money, it’s in your best interest to keep them quietly occupied for the duration of the trip. Many newer cars come pre-loaded with DVD players and seat-back screens, but if you don’t have those newer conveniences, an iPad will get the job done handily. Our CinemaSeat case for iPad, iPad mini, and iPad Air recreates the seat-back model perfectly. And, unless you want to listen to SpongeBob for the whole trip, we’d recommend adding some headphones to the mix. Volume limiting headphones like our KaZoo MyPhones are a perfect fit for kids of all ages.
Of course, we all know that all these navigation and video apps are hard on your battery life, and nothing kills the fun of a road trip like the sudden, stoney silence that follows a dead battery, so make sure you pack plenty of power! A car charger like the PowerJolt will make sure you never run out of juice. (More tips for preserving battery life can be found here!)
Finally, what’s the most important part of any road trip? The music, of course! If you’ve got a car that’s recent enough to have an auxiliary input, then all you need is an aux cable and you’re good to go. If you’ve got a cassette deck, a cassette adapter will do the trick, too. If your car is stuck in that awkward period between cassette and aux, and all you’ve got is the radio, then you’ll need an FM transmitter like iTrip Auto. an FM transmitter will take the audio from your smartphone or MP3 player and turn it into a rolling radio station, playing nothing but your favorite road trip songs.
