Beacon Universal Remote Control System

I can’t tell you how often my kids run off with the TV remote,  I often end up finding it hidden in their bedrooms or buried underneath the couch. Do you ever lose your remote?

We’ve partnered with software developer Dijit to turn your favorite iOS or smartphone device into a universal remote! How’s that for the perfect solution?

Universal Remote App

Beacon turns an iOS or smartphone device into a handy, easy-to-use remote for home entertainment systems—handy because you always know where it is: your pocket. It lets your iOS or mobile device control every component in your home entertainment system by converting Bluetooth signals from your device to the infrared commands your components are expecting. Beacon pairs your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) or smartphone with Dijit’s Universal Remote App, putting complete control of your home entertainment center in the palm of your hand. There are no bulky cases or dongles, no messy wires or cables.

Setup and pairing is simple. Paired with Beacon via Bluetooth, your smartphone is just a few taps away from using Dijit’s intuitive Programming Guide. Your Multi-Touch or touch screen display is the remote. You can change channels, volume, input, program your DVR, and lots, lots more.

Never go hunting for your remote again!

Pricing and Availability

Beacon, $79.99, will be available May 2011.

Going to CES?

CES attendees can preview Beacon at the Griffin booth, iLounge Pavillion — North Hall #4727, and in the Dijit booth, iLounge Pavilion — North Hall #4137.

Thanks for the feedback Mike. I’ll be sure to pass it along.

Can more than one Beacon be used in a household. e.g. one for the living room and a second for the bedroom.

Yes, you just need to pair it with your device to use it. Hope this helps.

I want to use the beacon with two different iPhones . In your previous posts you say that it remembers paired devices . So would I be right to assume if my wife was using through her iPhone then turns her bluetooth off and I turned my iPhone on (previously paired) I could now use the device? Thanks for your time .

    Yes, that’s correct. Thanks Paul.

Thanks for the comment. A wall mount is certainly something to consider in a possible future iteration. I’m glad you’re putting Beacon to good use.

My entertainment system incorporates two satellite receivers from the same manufacturer, side by side on the shelf. Each has a matching remote. Can I set up the app to recognize each one and control them individually?

  • Muchly

Hi, I really want to purchase one but living in the UK I want to know if it works with Sky+ HD. Most reviews seem to suggest it won’t. Please let me know if this is the case? Thanks!

    Still nothing for PS3?

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

It is not compatible with international channel guides. However, it will still work as a universal remote control.

Just wanted to update you that the iPad app is coming soon.

If both remotes are identical and the IR signal is the same. I don’t imagine this will work.

  • Rsemrau

Somehow the two satellite units know one remote from the other. Does the Beacon not discriminate in the same way? Does it not learn codes from remote controls?

Hi Dave – 2 questions – will Beacon work thru glass doors, and any updates for the ps3?

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Yes, Beacon work via IR. So, it should work through glass.

If you have an IR adapter for your PS3, then Beacon should work. Out of the box, PS3 only supports control via BlueTooth, which will not work with Beacon.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, if the codes are different for each remote, it should work fine. Thanks.

I’d love the product but I want it to be able to work on the PS3… Is there anyway to do so?

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

It should work with an IR adapter.

Any word on an update to control boxee box?
