CarTrip and CleanDrive App

UPDATE: NOV 2011
Unfortunately, CarTrip and the CleanDrive app have been placed on hold for the foreseeable future. We realize that many of you were excited about the prospect of these products, as we were too. However, it was determined that more testing and development was needed before we could bring this to market.
If and when we have further news on the status of CarTrip or CleanDrive we will be sure to let you know.  We sincerely appreciate your understanding. Thanks.

Have you ever wondered how efficiently your car is running? Have you ever been nervous when you saw your “Check Engine” light come on?

CarTrip

CarTrip

CarTrip is the easy, fun tool that helps you drive more efficiently, save money, and do your part to help the environment. CarTrip’s Bluetooth monitor plugs into the car’s On-Board Diagnostic Computer Reader (OBD-II) port to record and analyze data from the car’s on-board computer.

CleanDrive

CleanDriveCleanDrive

Our CleanDrive app will monitor your car’s performance, collecting realtime data like fuel consumption, acceleration, top speed and engine diagnostic codes. CleanDrive crunches the numbers and displays a “Carbon Score” in an easy-to-understand format on the iOS or Android device’s screen. Instantaneous, trip, and long-term averages are recorded to give a clear view of how your driving habits impact the environment over time.

CleanDrive will also display and reset the diagnostic codes sent by your car’s on-board computer, so that you will know what the “Check Engine” light is really saying.

CarTrip, $89.99, will be available in the first quarter of 2011. CleanDrive, a free download, will be available for iOS in Q1 2011, and Q2 for Android.

Going to CES?

If you’re going to the Consumer Electronics Show, be sure to pop by our booth – North Hall #4727 to see them in person.

    This looks pretty cool.

However, I understand the appeal in jumping on the eco/carbon bandwagon but please tell me there will be an alternate or “pro” version of the app that gathers more data and statistics and looses the cutesy carbon footprint crap?

Being able to monitor and graph over time status from my cars sensors will do far more for affecting my milage and thus my consumption of gas. It looks like this could have great applications – it depends on how good the Griffin app is, or the CarTrip will be able to work with some other existing ODB II stats applications that already exist on the iPhone.

  • ReleaseDate

When is this going to be released? There’s a week left in Q1 2011, and I’ve been waiting what seems like an eternity!

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

It should be available in late May. We’re all very included too. Thanks.

  • Alex

Any news on availability? will this app work for any other Bluetooth OBD2 dongle? Thank you in advance!

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Hi Alex. It should be later this month.
It will work with any ODB2 port.

    Thanks.

When in the world is this coming out? I thought it was in Q1 2011, then Q2 2011, now when? I’d really like to purchase this for father’s day, but I guess that doesn’t seem likely anymore.

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks for your patience Jason. Unfortunately, it won’t be available in
time. We’ll have it ready in August.
We want to be sure it’s 100% before it reaches you.

  • Fenias

It’s a shame.  I waited months, hoping to see something on the mailing list, but there was nothing.  It might be a good idea to let people on the mailing list know when availability slips to avoid losing potential customers.  After months of hearing nothing, I just went ahead and bought a dedicated OBD II scanner.  I don’t see myself shelling out more cash just to duplicate the functionality.

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks for your patience. We still intend to email those who have signed up for notification when CarTrip is available in August.

If you ever have a question on a product’s availability or anything else for that matter, please feel free to contact our customer service department.

    Thanks.

Hmmm, the product page is gone. I guess this product got shelved?

    Disappointed.
This announcement is too small, too late.

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

    Sorry to disappoint you.

  • Daniel

When you say on hold, does this mean shelved untill other projects are done or is this still a current project which is merely delayed?

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks Daniel. It is unclear at this time whether CarTrip will be produced.
If it is, I will be sure to let share it on the blog. Thanks.

Is this still potentially a product that will exist in August?

  • Chounder

Can you expand on the “Needs More Development” is that one way of saying big auto shot the product down?

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

I don’t have additional information at this time. It’s unclear whether it will be produced. I’ll be sure to share any news I learn here.

    Thanks.

  • Andy

As mentioned by another commenter, what’s the point of having a sign up for email notices about this product if you’re not going to use it?  I signed up and have yet to hear anything. I came to your site and searched for cartrip only to find nothing and finally found this via a google search…  Unfortunately it looks like I should start looking elsewhere for this type of solution.  :(

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks Andy. We had the sign up, because the plan was to launch the product. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the foreseeable future.

  • weinstonsaz

I am desperate and want to know if will be released one daybecause otherwise buy another.

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

For the foreseeable future, CarTrip will remain on hold.
It is unclear at this time whether it will be produced. If it is, I will be sure share the news here.

    Thanks.

  • Morcegolas

I have waited too to much time for this product and know after searching again and didn’t find it in griffin web page, I found this blog with google and what is my surprise when I realized that this product has been put on hold. ;(

    Approved

    Thanks for the comment.

It is unclear at this time whether CarTrip will be produced. If it is, I will be sure to let you know here and we will email anyone who signed up for updates.

    Thanks.

How can a product that never existed win awards?  You should have sent out an email as soon as you put it on hold.  That would have been the professional thing to do.  Why the cover up, no product page that says it’s on hold, press releases removed.  Did you guys sell out to Big Auto Repair, did you get sued?  Is Part of the suit that you can’t discuss it??  Oh ……….   Will this blog page disappear shortly ??????????  Will there be a documentary “Who Killed the Griffin Car Trip” ??  Are Aliens involved ??

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks for the comment. The product proto-type did exist, there are videos from CES on YouTube if you’re interested.

The page was removed for the time being, because we don’t expect it to come to market in the foreseeable future. It “may” one day, if it does, we’ll be sure to share the news.

No cover up, no selling out, no law suits, no aliens (thankfully).

    Thanks.

The iOS does not have the necessary APIs for OBD2 data via Bluetooth. Apple heavily restricts what Bluetooth communication is permitted. Presently only a jailbroken device could interface with this product.

I suspect Griffin is waiting and hoping that Apple permits more Bluetooth components with iOS 5.

I don’t really see the need for the coverup. In fact I would have waited on the product had Griffin not tried to rewrite history. For now only WIFI OBD2 readers will work with our phones.

  • Bigtime Disappointed

Wow.  I too was anxiously awaiting having returned a dedicated OBD II reader when I signed up for the e-mail notice.  Why in the world did you not use that to send out notification that the product is “on hold”?  I came about this news the way it seems most have – by noticing the product had mysteriously vanished from the car product pages and then Google lead me here.  Bad way to handle your loyal customers.

  • http://www.dyeweb.com porkozone

Add me to the list of being disappointed that an announcement was not sent out to those that signed up. I know you don’t WANT to give us bad news, but it’s pretty frustrating to have to track this info down instead of being told.

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Frank Hirsch

Same for me, was waiting since months relying on the YouTube demo and Awards you got. That could have been planned better!
    Now we are all disappointed…

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks for your comment Frank. We really do appreciate your feedback. If we don’t feel 100% on a product before it comes to market, we place it on hold until we do. We would never want to release something that you were not satisfied with.

If anything changes with the status of CarTrip, I’ll be the first to let you know.

  • Pete

Just be transparent if you want our loyalty – the device can’t pair with a non-developer or non-jailbroken iOS device. Maybe iOS 5 will remedy this, maybe not.

  • Matt Dudek

Not to beat a dead horse, but I’ve been lusting after this product since it was announced at CES and really hope it eventually comes to market. I’m sure you’re working hard on it. Good luck and keep up the good work.

  • http://www.griffintechnology.com/connect Dave Delaney

Thanks Matt. At this time, I’m not sure whether it will come to market. I will certainly update this post should things change.

  • Scottycs

Very disappointing that there is no affordable OBD2 bluetooth/wifi solution that works with the world’s most popular phone…..

  • Scott Manies

I was watching the product page and am disappointed that you will not be bringing this product to market in the near future.

  • Dwtramsey

I am guessing that Griffin couldn’t work out how to handle the mammoth database of error codes for every OBDII car that exists, plus updates. In all markets.

Why not team up with a handheld ODBII diagnostics manufacturer and use their data/update tech? Probably didn’t work out, because then no-one would buy the existing overpriced specialist handsets if they had CarTrip which could do so much more.
Not a well thought through product concept! Such a shame.
